Sonia Almeida’s paintings explore disparate yet connected visual languages brought together within a single work. Her interests in nonverbal forms of communication, symbolism, and abstraction, and the slippages of translation, are interwoven across her hybrid paintings, drawings, and textile works. Selected solo exhibitions include Condo 2017, The Approach, London, UK (2017); Forward/Play/Pause, MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA (2014); cupping the hand behind the ear and The Angle of the Sun’s Rays, Simone Subal Gallery, New York (2016 and 2012, respectively); The Reader, T293, Rome, Italy (2011). Recent group shows include James and Audrey Foster Prize Exhibition, ICA/Boston, MA (2017); Conversations: Recent Portuguese Art in the Serralves Collection, Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto, Portugal (2017); DeCordova Biennial, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA (2013); and Painting Overall, Prague Biennale 5, Czech Republic (2011) and To Be abstract, Chiado 8, Culturgest, Lisbon, Portugal (2009).
